THE MISSION
The public spaces have so much impact on our daily lives. Living near negative public spaces will decrease your change in moving up the ladder, because of self-fulfillment. Changing people’s public spaces creates a positive effect on their daily lives and so will change their lives. This humanity approach to public spaces is forgotten over the years. Design can be an open and inclusive process and that is what we wanted to use not only to create a better public space but also to create more of a community.
THE OUTCOME
What we are doing is making a huge mural in the middle in Buitenhof, Delft. This artwork has to represent and celebrate relationships in Buitenhof. It also has to show the identity of Buitenhof, so everybody feels something in their artwork. This artwork is made by the citizens. We let the citizen's design, participate in workshops, choose the best designs and finally make the best design on the wall.
The date is set in June to complete the painting. Currently, we are doing brainstorm sessions and workshops.

THE IMPACT
By using this approach people will get an appreciation for each other, curiosity and dialogues can be started. So, the road to the artwork is just as important or maybe even more important than the artwork itself. Buitenhof is a disadvantaged neighborhood in Delft and people live day by day. By letting them make something important that has a real impact in their neighborhood we want to let them recharge from their daily problems and stress. In this way we want to give them a feeling of joy and importance.

Design can be an open and inclusive process and that is what we wanted to use not only to create a better public space but also to create more of a community in neighborhoods. The mission was to create with a mural a change in the Gillisbuurt in Buitenhof in Delft.
THEORY
Before we started with our project I made a theoretical framework. This framework is translated into the poster seen on the right. The poster is named: Let citizens built their own happiness in their neighborhood. The framework shows that building your own happiness is like building a house. You start with the foundation. Who is living in the neighborhood, what is the history of the neighborhood and what does the neighborhood looks like. All the information is collected by field research. After the first step you are able to build the house. This is done by certain criteria. The house has to unfold people, decrease the stigmas and create conversations. The last step is deciding who is going to build the house. The builders are all the citizens living in the area. We are just the boosters of the project. The citizens are going to make the project.
PARTICIPATION
After doing our field research. We got to know the Gillisbuurt and the people living here. The Gillisbuurt is a disadvantaged neighborhood with a rich history of criminality. There are more than forty cultures.
The mural is not going to be just a mural. By creating workshops, brainstorm sessions and just by talking with residents we collect information. Stories, habitats, people, cultures, songs everything that shows the identity of the neighborhood. This identity is something that makes the Gillisbuurt unique. An area with beautiful cultures, people and stories, but nobody knows it. Residents are not proud of their neighborhood and the Gillisbuurt knows a number of stigmas. By showing the true colors of the neighborhood the real identity is shown. In this residents will get proud of their neighborhood and stigmas will disappear.
MURAL
After collecting all the cultures, stories, habitats and people of the area the design is made. This design is made in collaboration with a mural artist. The design will be sent back to the residents and they will give feedback. The feedback will, if needed, be put into the design. This will be repeated until the residents are 100% happy.
The design will be made into a coloring page. The coloring page will be handed out to all the residents. The residents will color the page and the best thirty will win a place as painter off the wall. Together with the mural artist they will make the mural.
In this way the residents are joining every step of the design process and the mural will be an artwork made by them. An Artwork to be proud of, to be proud of yourself and the neighborhood.
The date is set in June to complete the painting. Currently we are doing brainstorm sessions and workshops.
